Ruston receives sound audit

The city of Ruston has received “the best type of opinion you could get” on its 2013 audit, accountant Doug Brewer told the board of aldermen this week.
“The city once again ended the year in sound financial position,” Brewer said.
Auditors reported only one finding, that dealt with the Section 8 housing program and resulted from problems filing an electronic report, Brewer said.

RFD responds to calls

On Tuesday, the Ruston Fire Department responded to several emergency calls including a car fire at 10:35 a.m. on Interstate 20, pictured above.
Eric Brazzel, public education officer with RFD, said no one was injured during the fire, and the car was a total loss.
At approximately 4:50 p.m. a kitchen fire occurred in a residence in the 1000 block of Eastland Street.
Brazzel said smoke and fire damage occurred in the kitchen area causing thousands of dollars of damage. No injuries reported.

Perfect season for Lady Bearkits

Kathy Steed goes out undeated in RJHS girls track coaching career

Ruston Junior High School’s girls track team sent Coach Kathy Steed out in the Lady Bearkits’ usual winning fashion on April 1, winning the Simsboro Junior High Track Meet to finish out the season undefeated.
That marked 16 consecutive years of all first-place track meet finishes for Steed’s girls teams at RJHS. Steed will retire at the end of the school year.
The RJHS girl’s team took first at the Simsboro meet with 243 points.
RJHS individual results from that meet are as follows:
100m Dash
First, Alexius Austin 13.2
Second, Aniyah Roane 13.3
200m Dash

Ruston JV team wins; freshman squad falls

Michael Courtney, shown hitting a home run, and the Ruston High School junior varsity baseball took a 11-4 win over Minden Wednesday. Minden countered with a 10-5 win over the Bearcats in a freshman team game.

Tech softball defeats SLU

Duran, Tufi combine for shutout victory

HAMMOND — Anna Cross hit a three-run home run and Bianca Duran and Pauline Tufi combined to pitch a shutout as Louisiana Tech defeated Southeastern Louisiana 7-0 at North Oak Park Wednesday evening.
Cross gave the Lady Techsters (15-25) an early lead with a two-out, three-run shot in the top of the second inning off of Lions starter Spencer Adkinson. The home run — Cross’ third of the year — came following a Courtney Lowe single and a Tori Charters walk with two outs. Cross then line Adkinson’s offering over the left centerfield fence, giving Tech the lead.

Bulldogs hold last spring practice

T-Day Spring Game scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday

Louisiana Tech held its final practice before Saturday’s T-Day Spring Game with a two-hour session in full pads on the Tech Practice Fields Wednesday.
The session marked the 14th practice of the spring with the 15th coming in the form of the T-Day Spring Game that will kick off at Joe Aillet Stadium at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Wednesday’s session included final tune-ups for the team heading into the spring game that featured high-energy work from both sides of the ball.

Tech golfers finish in tie for ninth place

WEST POINT, Miss. — Louisiana Tech had a final round surge of 6-under-par score of 282 as the Bulldogs finished in a tie for ninth at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship in West Point Tuesday afternoon.
That late round surge pushed Tech from 14th place into a tie for ninth against Troy as the tournament already besieged by bad weather finished moments before a thunderstorm hit the Old Waverly Golf Course.

NT@R/RHS: Job shadowing pays off for students

New Tech @ Ruston juniors recently saw their education being applied as they engaged in real-world work experiences during the program’s second year of job shadowing. Each student spent a total of eight hours between two different businesses as part of the Ruston High School program criteria, something designed to help students make a solid connection between community and school while planning for their future.
