Arson investigation ongoing

Ruston Fire Department firefighters were on the scene Friday evening battling a playground equipment fire at Greenwood Park located at 1306 Cornell Ave. RFD officials said Saturday that arson is the suspected cause of the fire and that the blaze was under investigation.

New Tech building complete

Ruston High School has something to celebrate as the New Tech @ Ruston building is officially finished.
Lincoln Parish Board members — excluding District 7 Representative Trott Hunt, who was absent — unanimously approved substantial completion of the project during their July 2 meeting.
The New Tech building replaces the old agricultural science building, and a new agricultural science building was built as well. The project began when voters approved a five year extension to the Ruston District No. 1 millage tax in April 2011. That vote provided approximate $3.4 million to fund the two projects.

Two GSU students earn scholarships

GRAMBLING — Two Grambling State University students have been awarded News Corporation-United Negro College Fund scholarships as a part of a nationwide competition.
Senior Colin Bryan Jno-Finn and recent graduate Erina L. Love will each receive a $2,500 scholarship for education expenses. Both have been Department of Mass Communication majors and applied for the scholarship as a part of the Grambling State University Media Bureau.

EOC test scores good news for Lincoln Parish

Lincoln Parish high-school students showed a 4 percent increase on their End-of-Course exams than many across the state, even with another test — United States history — being thrown into the mix.

In the eyes of the world, America stands for one thing above all: the promise of freedom. Even people who have never laid eyes on an American know of the promise our country represents. They know that promise means a better life, a life of freedom.
From the moment our Founding Fathers first put ink to the parchment that is the Declaration of Independence and pledged their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor to create this nation, that promise has come alive. If the Revolution had failed, and the massive power of the British Empire had prevailed over the colonists, the signers of the Declaration would have been rounded up, tried and executed for treason against the Crown.

Is non-stick cookware dangerous?

Dear EarthTalk: I’ve read conflicting reports about the dangers of non-stick cookware. I have a set of older non-stick pans and am not sure if I need to replace them. Are they harmful to use, particularly if they have a few scratches?

Giving thanks to firefighters

During this warm summer, after celebrating the Peach Festival and Fourth of July, your writer wishes to acknowledge and give special thanks to the firefighters of Lincoln Parish.
There have been in recent days many events to which we are now reacting as a country. There is the recent and continuing coup d'etat occurring in Egypt. This could and in many circles will dominate the news. It is worthy of commentary. The implications that flow from de-stabilization in this country, especially with the location of the Suez Canal. Foreign intervention there is probable.

Question: How does a regular person make it these days? With everything costing so much, it is really so hard to save any money. Do only rich people get to retire one day?
Answer: I wish I had some money.
