Seeking to improve

LPSB to ask voters to extend Ruston millage

In November, the Lincoln Parish School Board plans to ask voters to approve an additional 10-year extension on the Ruston District No. 1 millage tax to pay for more than $20 million of capital outlay projects around the district.

A refreshing dip in the pool

Event gives pups, owners chance to cool off

Summer goes out with a splash.
In recent years area residents and their beloved dogs have had the chance to take a swim and cool off from the hot summer days.
This is the fourth year the K9 Pool Party has been held. Director of Ruston Parks and Recreation Ashlynn Shell said the idea came from other communities.

Belles to bring back the style

For a decade area residents have been able to show their support for Ruston High School’s Bearcat Belles.
As usual, the Dinner and Style Show will feature a performance, style show and silent auction.
Melanie Garrison, sponsor, said the event has been held since the 1992-93 school year.

Dancing at the Dixie opens season

Dixie Center for the Arts opens the 2013–14 Concert Season with an evening that’s sure to be one of the best nights you’ve ever had in the historic Ruston theatre. We welcome the Harmon Drew Super Group to our stage on Sept. 21. We’ve enjoyed dancing to the sounds of the band at the annual Mardi Gras Ball and will certainly find “Dancing at the Dixie” a night to remember.

Help 4 Paws help ‘Deuce’

It costs about $2,000 a month to provide for all the animals currently under 4 Paws Rescue Inc.’s care. Each month, they have approximately 20 donors who help them meet about half that number.
But that doesn’t include emergencies, like the one 4 Paws is facing now.

Weatherspoon makes historic move

Lady Techsters coach first WNBA great to join the National Basketball Retired Players Association

Teresa Weatherspoon is accustomed to making history.
The five-time WNBA all-star and current Louisiana Tech women’s basketball coach continued that trend when it was announced Thursday that she will be the first WNBA great to join the National Basketball Retired Players Association.
The announcement came from the NBRPA, the only alumni association directly supported by both the NBA and National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), after a historic vote by its board of directors to welcome in former WNBA players as members.

Tech’s Wilmore named All-America Scholar

Louisiana Tech junior Travis Wilmore was one of only two in-state student-athletes to earn honors on the 2013 Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars team released by the Golf Coaches Athletic Association on Wednesday.
The Alexandria native joined Southeastern Louisiana’s Rhys West as the lone two golfers from Louisiana-based Division I programs to earn the prestigious honor. The duo were two of 152 Division I players nation-wide to be named to the team.
