The British are coming to Ruston

The British are coming to Ruston Parks and Recreation.
With the World Cup only a few months away and with around 20 million Americans now playing the sport, the number one soccer company in the United States and Canada, Challenger Sports, has been invited to hold one of their highly regarded “British Soccer Camps” right here in the growing soccer community of Ruston.
RPAR has teamed up to host the week-long “British Soccer Camp” June 9-13 at the Sports Complex, located at 1501 Farmerville St.

Funeral services for Joy M. Williams are will be Thursday, February 13th 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Owens Memorial Chapel, preceded by visitation from 9:00-10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston. Mrs. Williams, 86, passed away February 10th at her home in Ruston after battling with dementia for many years. She was born February 12, 1927 in Bossier City, Louisiana, attended public schools in northeast Texas, and married the love of her life on July 12, 1944 in Arcadia.

Harris “Ray” Canterbury

Funeral services for Harris “Ray” Canterbury, age 93, of Simsboro, Louisiana will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, February 13, 2014, at First Baptist Church in Simsboro, Louisiana. Officiating the service will be Bro. Johnie Adkins and Bro. Jason Cole. Interment will follow at St. Rest Cemetery on Highway 146, Dubach, Louisiana under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston, Louisiana. Mr. Canterbury was born August 29, 1920, and passed away February 10, 2014.

Kupcakes for Kids set for Friday

It's almost time for the sixth Annual "Kupcakes for the Kids" fundraiser to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The event is set from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Friday at Community Trust Bank Financial Center, located at 1511 N. Trenton St.

Brown in the DA race

Third Judicial District felony prosecutor Cary Brown has become the first officially announced candidate for the district attorney’s job being vacated by retiring DA Bob Levy.
Brown formally announced his candidacy Monday night before a crowd of supporters gathered at Ruston’s Historic Fire Station. The 3rd Judicial District is comprised of Lincoln and Union parishes.
“As a native of Ruston with family also in Union Parish, I can tell you that no one cares more about the citizens of this jurisdiction and their protection than I do,” Brown said.

Schools closed today

in

Schools across the parish will be closed today and some will stay closed on Wednesday.
Just after 2 p.m. Monday, Superintendent of Schools Danny Bell said that schools in the Lincoln Parish School System would be closed today and Wednesday due to just released weather information.
"We participated in the National Weather Service webinar," Bell said. "We have made the decision to cancel classes tomorrow and Wednesday. There appears to be a significant threat of ice and freezing rain, especially along the I-20 corridor."

Celebrating a ‘Timeless Tradition’

Annual event draws more than 200 attendees

More than 200 mom’s and daughters carried their dolls to a “Timeless Traditions” movie and tea party hosted by Ruston’s nonprofit group Quota International. During the event, 7-year-old Emory-Cooper Leggett decided to give the most coveted item of the day — a genuine American Girl Doll — away to her best friend, Kady Rowley.
“Kady always wanted one, and I already had Molly, so I gave her Saige,” Emory-Cooper said.
