Locals accepted into La. School for Math, Science, Arts

The Louisiana School for Math, Science and the Arts welcomed 138 new students during the school’s annual matriculation ceremony held at 2 p.m. Aug. 30, in the A.A. Fredericks Auditorium located on the campus of Northwestern State University in Natchitoches.
The ceremony recognized students’ accomplishments, reinforced their commitment to LSMSA and encouraged them to apply the necessary diligence to persevere until reaching commencement.

Tech set to begin C-USA play

Louisiana Tech University officially begins its Conference USA era tonight as the Bulldogs play host to in-state league foe Tulane at 6:30 p.m. tonight in a nationally-televised matchup at Joe Aillet Stadium.

Ragsdale replaces Williams as GSU head coach

Hours after Doug Williams was released from his position as head coach, the Grambling State University football team was out on the practice field Monday, working under the auspices of interim head coach George Ragsdale, who had been serving as the Tigers’ running backs coach.
Williams was called into GSU president Frank Pogue’s office early Wednesday morning and was informed of the president’s decision to sever their relationship.

Tech soccer to face UALR, Grambling

The road grind continues for Louisiana Tech this weekend as they conclude a seven-game road stretch with contests at UALR on Friday night at 7 p.m. and at Grambling State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Tech (2-4-1) is beginning to find its groove offensively, scoring five goals total this past weekend versus in-state foes UL-Lafayette and McNeese State. In their previous five matches, the team only netted two goals combined.

August 5, 2013
The Village of Choudrant Town Council met in regular session. Present were Mayor Bill Sanderson, Alderman Ragan Aswell Alderman Ricky Maier, Alderman Brandon Williams and guests. Meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Mayor Sanderson. Mayor Sanderson gave prayer.
Motion to approve the agenda was made Alderman Aswell, seconded by Alderman Williams. Approved.
Motion to approve the minutes of July1, 2013, was made by Alderman Aswell, seconded by Alderman Maier. Approved.

LPSB closer to unitary status

As soon as mid-October, the Lincoln Parish School Board could achieve unitary status in the decades-old desegregation case that forced the redistricting of all four Ruston elementary schools during the 2012-13 school year.
Superintendent of Schools Danny Bell was in court on Monday to deal with the pending case, specifically the portion dealing with whether or not the school board is responsible for the GSU and Tech laboratory schools.
During the course of that proceeding, Bell said he received promising news on the school board’s unitary status.

GSU coach sacked

Reports out of Grambling State University early this morning say the school has terminated the contract of head football coach Doug Williams.
Williams confirmed the firing via phone call.
“The president (GSU President Frank Pogue) called me in and let me know,” Williams said. “That’s really all I can say at this point. My attorney has advised me not to say anything else right now.”
Grambling State has started the season off at 0-2 and is slated to play Lincoln University of Missouri in Kansas City, Mo., on Saturday.

Ruston High School Senior Benjamin Serio, son of John and Donna Serio, was announced as one of the approximately 16,000 semifinalists in the 59th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,000 National Merit Scholarships worth about $35 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition.
