RCT holds auditions

in
‘Christmas Belles’ to ring in December production

With one production under their belt for the season, Ruston Community Theatre is now gearing up for their next production.
Directed by Nancy Wallace, the cast of “Christmas Belles” will take the Dixie Center for the Arts Stage Dec. 5-8.
Auditions are set to be at 6 p.m. Thursday and Aug. 22.
“This is the second part of a trilogy by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and James Wooten,” Wallace said. “The first was performed a few years ago — ‘Dearly Beloved.’”
Wallace said there are four characters available to audition for — two males and two females.

Ways to tackle childhood obesity

Childhood obesity in the United States continues to increase. And, the trend toward obesity worldwide is rising with one in three youth overweight or obese. According to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, between 1970 and 2004, the prevalence of overweight individuals almost tripled among U.S. preschoolers and adolescents and quadrupled among children aged 6 to11 years.

KLB calls for award submissions

Keep Louisiana Beautiful (KLB), the state’s nonprofit organization dedicated to litter prevention and waste reduction, is calling on Louisiana residents to help nominate exemplary groups and individuals whose efforts help to keep Louisiana beautiful. The annual awards program presents seven awards recognizing exceptional volunteers in the state and includes the Alice Foster Award, named in honor of the former first lady. The deadline for entries is Aug. 30. Entries should be sent to info@keeplouisianabeautiful.org.

Weather sirens boost safety in community

Last year, Ruston’s leaders decided that they needed to do something to help make the community safer.
They didn’t want to wait to find a grant that might not come through, further jeopardizing their citizen’s safety. So, they took money from the city’s coffers — money designated to improve life for the town’s citizens — and erected poles and placed a new siren alarm system, designed to alert the community when bad weather was afoot.

The evening of April 20, 2010, was like most other spring evenings in the Gulf of Mexico, until 9:45 p.m. when, 50 miles off the Louisiana coast, a fiery explosion triggered the worst oil-spill in U.S. history.
One mile beneath the Gulf’s surface, the Macondo well blew apart, killing 11 men on the British Petroleum’s Deepwater Horizon rig, and ultimately spewing about 4 million barrels of oil into the water. Louisiana suffered most of the short- and long-term damage.
