12 Bulldogs selected as preseason All-CUSA

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Highlighted by running back Kenneth Dixon and Illinois transfer and defensive end Houston Bates, Louisiana Tech placed 12 players on the Preseason All-Conference USA Teams as announced Tuesday by Phil Steele’s 2014 College Football Preview.
Dixon and Bates were Louisiana Tech’s first-team honorees while cornerback Le’Vander Liggins and kicker Kyle Fischer garnered second-team honors.

Lending a hand to RPAR

Volunteers receive many benefits

On Feb. 25, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the volunteer rate declined by 1.1 percentage points to 25.4 percent for the year ending in September 2013.
According to the BLS website, “About 62.6 million people volunteered through or for an organization at least once between September 2012 and September 2013. The volunteer rate in 2013 was the lowest it has been since the supplement was first administered in 2002.”

Jacks celebrate 50 years

Don and Joan Barham Jacks, of Dubach, are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary today. The couple was married June 4, 1964, at New Prospect Baptist Church in Dubach. They have two children — the late Jeffery Jay Jacks and Jeanie Jacks Rowland with husband Jay. The couple have two grandchildren Darby and Devin Rowland.

Neighborhood makes history

Ruston’s Board of Aldermen made back-to-back historic decisions this week that open new avenues for neighborhood development and preservation for years to come.
The board’s approval of the University Hills Neighborhood Conservation Overlay District marks Ruston’s first foray into a relatively new type of zoning that allows neighborhoods to self-impose their own set of regulations.

McAllister mum on future

It’s no great shock that 5th District Rep. Vance McAllister has evidently not totally ruled out a re-election bid after all.
The first-term lawmaker, who some media outlets dubbed “the kissing congressman” in the wake of a surveillance camera video showing McAllister and a female aide in a hallway embrace, declared back in April that he wouldn’t be a candidate this fall.
What a difference a couple of months make. Now, the 40-year-old Oak Grove Republican says he may change his mind before the Aug. 20 start of candidate qualifying.

Elenora Albrecht Cawthon

Elenora Albrecht Cawthon was born December 6, 1917, in Mission Valley, Texas, the elder daughter of Lillie Lassmann Albrecht and Otto H. Albrecht. She went to her heavenly home on June 1, 2014, in Carrollton, Texas. Visitation and the funeral will be at Zion Lutheran Church in Mission Valley, Texas, beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, June 6, 2014.

Charles Ray Hancock

Funeral services for Charles Ray Hancock, age 79 of Ruston, will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, June 5, 2014 at Owens Memorial Chapel in Ruston. Rev. David Abernathy will officiate the service. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Ruston under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston.
