Ewings, AT&T help fund reading camp

The Rosemary Ewing Foundation and AT&T are making learning fun again at the Lincoln Parish Summer Literacy Day Camp.
Former Sen. Randy Ewing said the program started as a tool to hone reading skills of local students in the early stages of their education.
“We are delighted to be a part of this program,” Ewing said. “The development of a child’s self-esteem is crucial and there needs to be innovative and imaginative approaches that appeal to them.”

Peach ice cream to be available at festival

Each June, people jump in their cars and travel from all over the place with one thing in mind — several good licks of some sweet Ruston peach ice cream.
The Eta Omicron chapter of Beta Sigma Phi has been serving up the sweet treat during the Louisiana Peach Festival for more than 30 years.
Diane Zumwalt, chairperson for this year’s event, said the ice cream being served at the festival is an exclusive treat.

Rolling Hills one of largest disaster relief units in state

Many folks may know that Rolling Hills is a thrift store and a ministry. What they may not know is that the store fronts what is one of the largest disaster relief units in the state.
“We have been involved in disaster relief since the 1990s,” Director David Abernathy said.
“We have about 1,000 trained volunteers all across North Louisiana.”
Rolling Hills serves as a hub for the numerous volunteers across North Louisiana. The organization conducts training sessions for new volunteers and refresher courses for those who have already been taught disaster relief skills.

Young, Wheeler to wed

Dr. and Mrs. Tony Young, of Ruston, are pleased to announce the engagement and approaching wedding of their daughter Marny Katherine Young, of Ruston, to Justin Michael Wheeler, of Holland, Michigan.

Marny is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Young, of Wisner, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard McAdams, of Ruston, and the late Betty McAdams.

Justin is the son of Mr. Mike Wheeler, of Holland, Michigan, and Ms. Dona Wheeler, of Holland, Michigan. He is the grandson of Mrs. Florence Behrendt, of Holland, Michigan, the late Kenneth Behrendt, and Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Wheeler, of Holland Michigan.

Six Tech walk-ons get scholarships

Louisiana Tech head football coach Skip Holtz announced Wednesday that six walk-on football student-athletes have been placed on scholarship beginning this summer.
The six players — C.J. Cleveland, Kyle Fischer, Ricky Jones, Marlon Seets, Conner Smith and Darrell Travis — have all been significant contributors on special teams and on the scout team.
“These young men have all contributed to the team in various roles,” explained Holtz. “They have all had great attitudes in every aspect in our program.
