Suspect arrested in aggravated assault with a firearm

A Ruston man was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a firearm, reckless operation of a vehicle, possession of a firearm with obliterated serial numbers, driving under suspension, second degree battery and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon late Saturday night according to the Ruston Police Department.

Several bands to rock Ruston for the Peach Fest

Festival line-up caters to a variety of musical tastes

The 2014 Louisiana Peach Festival has cooked up a tasteful melody of music aimed to appease a variety of rhythmic appetites.
Held annually on the fourth weekend in June, this year’s PeachFest features Grammy Award winning Zydeco Artist Chubby Carrier and The Bayou Swamp Band, New Orleans-based 80’s cover band The Molly Ringwalds, Nashville-based country artist and Bastrop native Dylan Scott and the southern rock of Homer’s Louisiana Swamp Donky.
“I enjoy the peaches and the people,” Carrier said. “Louisiana people know how to put together a party and they know how to have a good time.”

GSU alumni make headway

One thing you can say about Grambling State University Alumni — they are proud of their school.
And why wouldn’t they be? In the past several years they’ve overcome a lot of obstacles and they have some of the most dedicated and loyal graduates of any university in the country — HBCU or not.
This was proven at Saturday night’s third annual Grambling University National Alumni Association Scholarship Gala.

LPL programs beat summer heat

Many of you have noticed that the temperatures are finally feeling like summer again, edging up into the 90s over the past couple of days.
With children out of school for summer break, mid-afternoons can be a little hot this time of year, but there’s a place in Ruston providing a little escape for our young ones come rain or shine. It’s one of the area’s true treasures – the Lincoln Parish Library.
That showed on Saturday as a Father’s Day event was held with Spiderman serving as the guest of honor.

The hidden problem of elder abuse

When you think of DART and the services we offer, what kind of person comes to your mind? Many of you may say that DART helps women who are being abused. That is true. But DART also serves men who are being abused, which is a growing number. We also serve the children of abuse victims, to help them deal with the trauma they have witnessed at home. We work with teenagers who are experiencing dating violence. We offer support to people who are being stalked or cyber-stalked, which means that someone is trying to track or control them through use of the phone and the internet.

The June monthly meeting of The North Central Louisiana TEA Party featured a discussion about tax reform with Douglas Opbroek, Louisiana State Director with Americans For Fair Taxation (AFFT).
Opbroek gave an informative PowerPoint presentation. He emphasized that “Tax reform is a year round issue, and it has an impact on our economy, our politics, and our freedoms.”

Lions Club hosts Judge Tatum

At the noon meeting of the Ruston Lions Club, the group was honored to have Ruston City Judge Danny Tatum as a guest speaker.  Judge Tatum told the Lions of the operations and limited scope  of the city court.
