Local talent to perform

Music Fest to host Russell, Dauzat/St. Marie

Music Fest XXVII is coming to El Dorado soon and two local musicians will be there to entertain the crowd. Monty Russell and Mat Dauzat, of Dauzat/St. Marie, will be performing during the festivities Oct. 3-4 in Union Square in downtown El Dorado.
Russell, who is a personal friend of the executive director of Music Fest, Mark Givens, said he has played since the festival’s beginning.
“It has grown exponentially since we first started,” Russell said. “The first year we played on a flatbed trailer. There was no stage. It was small, but still fun.”

RFD responds to call

At approximately 8:10 a.m. Ruston Fire Department and EMS responded to a call at the intersection of Louisiana Highways 151 and 146, with two medic units, one rescue unit and one command unit.
Eric Brazzel, public education officer with RFD, said a full-size truck was traveling south on Louisiana Highway 151 when the driver ran through the intersection, T-boning a small economy car, which was traveling east on Louisiana Highway 146.

Aker enters Grambling council race

Long-time Grambling resident Claud Aker says he’s running for the city’s council to abolish the current at-large representation system.
Aker, a Democrat, is one of eight candidates in the race for Grambling’s five council seats. The primary election is Nov. 4. Aker said he wants to see the current at-large system replaced by districts.
He said districts would not only give constituents a specific representative on the council, but would also foster accountability between councilmen and citizens.

First-Year Convocation welcomes, celebrates newest class of Louisiana Tech students

It’s become a rite of passage for new students entering Louisiana Tech University and a tradition of new Bulldogs making the transition from high school to college.
Tech’s seventh annual First-Year Convocation will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3 in Howard Auditorium. All first-year students, as well as Tech alumni and friends, are invited and encouraged to attend.

Minimize storm damage around the home

We are approaching the peak season for tropical storms and hurricanes. When looking at long-term averages of hurricanes and tropical storms in the Atlantic Basin, there is a broad maximum from late August through September with a pronounced peak occurring around Sept. 10. In north Louisiana these events can be damaging to landscapes and structures, primarily from strong winds and heavy rainfall. It may be difficult to entirely protect your home and yard from the strong winds of a storm, but there are certainly steps you can take to help minimize the damage

Tech soccer team rallies again

CHARLESTON, Illinois — The Louisiana Tech soccer team is already starting to build the reputation of comeback kids.
The team was down a goal at halftime but then exploded for three second half scores to defeat Eastern Illinois, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Field.
It marked the third comeback for Tech (4-0-1) in just five matches this season and wrapped up a great effort at the EIU Tournament.

Get in the game with your school

Are you ready for some football? You better be, because it’s here!
The wait ended for Lincoln Parish football fans over the weekend as Grambling State and Louisiana Tech Universities kicked off their seasons.
And with the high school regular season set to start on Friday, there are no more preseason scrimmages, practice sessions or jamborees. It’s all for real now.
Grambling State kicked off its season on the road, putting up a tough fight before falling at Lamar.
The Tigers head back to Texas this weekend to face the University of Houston at 6 p.m. Saturday.
