Tech quintet moves on to NCAAs

JACKSONVILLE, Florida — Louisiana Tech added three more advancing marks to Eugene, Oregon and the 2014 NCAA Championships as action concluded at the NCAA East Preliminary Championships at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville Saturday.
The three additional advancing entries give Louisiana Tech a total of five entries heading into the semifinal and final rounds at the NCAA Championships set for June 11-14 at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

Tech football adds five to roster

Louisiana Tech head football coach Skip Holtz announced the addition of five student-athletes to the program’s roster Friday including two fifth-year transfers from Big Ten Conference schools.
The Bulldogs added two defensive players — including defensive end Houston Bates from Illinois — and three offensive players highlighted by quarterback Cody Sokol from Iowa.
All five additions — Bates, Roland Dunn, Josh Gaston, David Mahaffey and Sokol — have signed financial aid agreements to attend Louisiana Tech and will be eligible this fall.

Techsters’ Camper named LSWA Coach of Year

Louisiana Tech head women’s tennis coach Chad Camper was named the state’s Coach of the Year after leading his team to a 15-7 record that was highlighted by a program best 11-match winning streak.
Joining Camper in receiving an honor from the Louisiana Sports Writers Association was sophomore Alexandra Starkova who for the second straight season picked up second team All-Louisiana accolades.
Camper had the daunting challenge of taking over a program with only one upperclassman on the roster and doing so only three weeks prior to the start of the spring season.

Williams gets 50 years for attempted murder

A Ruston man has been given the maximum sentence of 50 years at hard labor for the attempted second-degree murder of his former girlfriend.
Third Judicial District Judge Jay McCallum sentenced Jacques Patrick Williams, 48, after hearing the victim speak of the physical and mental pain and suffering she experienced as a result of the incident that occurred on Sept. 22, 2012.
McCallum handed down the sentence May 28.
