LPSO offers new app, office

On Friday, Lincoln ParishSheriff Mike Stone saw many years of hard work and dreaming come to fruition as his staff took up residence in the new state-of-the-art Lincoln Parish Public Safety Complex.
Stone said he is excited for the people of Lincoln Parish.
“This is a building that will provide an optimum level in public safety,” he said. “I am proud for our deputies because they will have a facility where they can operate and have the room and equipment needed to get the job done. This is one of the top facilities in the state.”

Candidates should be accessible

For the past several days my co-workers and I have been attempting to get in touch with each of the 76 candidates in the 23 races that will be on the Nov. 4 primary ballot.
We’re trying to give them the opportunity for a little exposure in the Daily Leader’s upcoming election edition. Contacting the local candidates has been fairly easy, but the district and statewide folks, not so much.

GRAMBLING — Call it a sophomore slump two games into the season, but the Grambling State Tigers are trying to do something about it.
After feeling his 0-2 Tigers took a step backwards last weekend in a 47-0 loss at Houston, Grambling coach Broderick Fobbs will give redshirt freshman quarterback Steven Johnson the start on Saturday against Bethune-Cookman after rotating Johnson with senior D.J. Williams over the past two weeks.
And Fobbs is hoping Johnson takes the ball and runs with it.

Tech finishes ninth in opening golf tourney

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Brandon Newton shot 2-under-par and Chuck Spears recorded the Bulldogs’ top finish at 20th as Louisiana Tech wrapped up action at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate Tuesday afternoon.
Newton’s 2-under-par 69 was the low score of the day for Louisiana Tech as the Bulldogs shot an even-par 284 to finish ninth overall.

RHS Frosh, JV teams fall

C.J. Wilis (16, above) and Ruston High School’s freshman team fell 24-8 to Ouachita Monday night while Marquez Coprue (82, below) and the junior varsity Bearcats lost 25-12 to the Lions.

Christopher Shayne Norman

Funeral services for Christopher Shayne Norman, age 38, of Choudrant, LA will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, September 11, 2014 at the First Baptist Church in Choudrant, officiating the service will be Rev. David Harrell and Rev. Ernie Norman. Interment will follow at Choudrant Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston.

Shayne was born May 11, 1976 and passed away September 8, 2014. He is preceded in death by his grandparents: C. L. Norman, sr., Charles M. Tolar and Voris Viola Brewster Pardue.

C-USA, LSWA awards Tech duo

Louisiana Tech brought home two of the three Louisiana Sports Writer’s Association Player of the Week honors as Kenneth Dixon claimed the offensive honors while Jonathan Barnes claimed the special teams honors.
Junior running back Kenneth Dixon ran for 184 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries in Louisiana Tech’s 48-20 blowout win at Louisiana-Lafayette Saturday. His 99-yard touchdown run in the first quarter set new records as the longest single run in Louisiana Tech, Conference USA and Cajun Field history.

Tech golf opens tourney in 8th place

Louisiana Tech had a slow start on the first day of the Jeff Jenkins era but finished strong as the Bulldogs completed the first two rounds of the Sam Hall Intercollegiate in eighth place at the Hattiesburg Country Club in Hattiesburg Monday.
Ben Robinson led Tech in the second round as the Bulldogs jumped four spots in the second round as the first day of action featured two, 18-hole rounds on the par-71, 6,902-yard course.
“Ben’s round was key this afternoon for our team,” new head coach Jeff Jenkins said.
