Waiting rubs water initiative wrong

“Good things come to those who wait,” the saying goes. It looks like the Union-Lincoln Regional Water Supply Initiative is going to have to wait a little longer.
The ULRWSI is the bi-parish organization that wants to pipe water from Lake D’Arbonne to Ruston and Farmerville as an alternative source to the beleaguered Sparta Aquifer. One of the first steps in what will be an expensive, elongated project is securing a site for a water treatment plant.

Lincoln Parish Little Leaguers go undefeated

The Bernice Nursing and Rehabilitation Little League baseball team recently completed its season undefeated at 8-0 in Lincoln Parish Little League play. Tech adds RB Walters

Louisiana Tech head football coach Skip Holtz has announced the addition of Mississippi prep running back Tywun Walters to the program’s list of newcomers for the 2014 season.
Walters — a 5-11, 218-pound tailback from Marks, Mississippi — will be a freshman when he reports for camp in August.
He graduated from M.S. Palmer High School where he was a first team all-state running back his senior season as he ran for 1,680 yards.
Over the course of his high school career, he ran for 5,870 yards scoring a total of 268 points and was a three-time all-district honoree.

GSU, MVSU football date changed

The Grambling State University football game at Mississippi Valley scheduled for Nov. 8 has been changed.
The game will now be a tape delayed, nationally-televised broadcast on one of the ESPN family of Networks at 6 p.m. Nov. 6 at Rice-Totten Stadium in Itta Bena, Mississippi.
ESPN has not yet officially released when the game will be televised as a part of their college football schedule.

Youth journalism contest being held

in

Young writers and photographers have until 5 p.m. July 22 to submit entries for the Louisiana Outdoor Writers’ Association’s annual Youth Journalism Contest.
There are two writing divisions: Junior Essay is open to boys and girls ages 7-13; Senior Essay is for writers ages 14-18.
Essays must be an original, unpublished writing about a personal experience while hunting, fishing, boating, camping, hiking or other related outdoor activity.
Essays must be 300-1,000 words long, and must be typed, preferably with double-spaced lines.

Ms. Rhonda West Jennings

A memorial service for Ms. Rhonda West Jennings, age 57 of Dubach, will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, June 30, 2014 at Fellowship Baptist Church in Dubach. Committal services will follow in Fellowship Cemetery in Dubach. Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until the time of the service on Monday at the church. Services are under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston.

Ruston Alderman Mayfield dies

District 2 representative remembered as passionate for people

Long-time Ruston Aldermen Elmore Mayfield has died at age 70.
Mayfield apparently suffered a massive heart attack at his home Monday evening and later passed away at Northern Louisiana Medical Center.
He represented District 2 for 21 years.
Colleagues and friends today expressed shock over Mayfield’s death. They say he was an ardent representative for his constituents, but had the entire city’s welfare at heart.
“Whatever he felt like was good for his district or good for Ruston, he was passionate about,” District 3 Alderman Jedd Lewis said.

Parents, start your babies

The 2014 annual Peach Festival Diaper Derby, sponsored by Barnes Portraiture, is set for 11 a.m. Saturday in the Trinity Center of the Trinity United Methodist Church. There will be four categories for children ages 6 months to 24 months. Entry forms may be picked up at Barnes Portraiture, located at 500 N. Bonner St., or printed from www.louisianapeachfestival.org. The deadline for entry is 5 p.m. Friday, and the cost is $16.

Denny devotes years to Ruston

Ruston native Lee Denny has been volunteering with the Louisiana Peach Festival for a number of years, and he said the 2014 edition is a big year for change.
Among the changes for the festival, which begins on Friday night, are a new parade route, an added carnival in Sexton lot and the new Peach Stops.
