Exchange student blessing to home

This August, a family in Ruston enjoyed a special experience by welcoming into their home a high school exchange student from Thailand. This volunteer host family is participating in the SHARE! Student Exchange Program for the 2014-15 school year. And this international exchange student is eager to learn about how Americans live.

Fond memories of Lincoln High

I just thought I’d take time out to write a heartwarming story about Lincoln High School. Recently, we celebrated our all class reunion. For me it all began in the fall of 1958 when I was in first grade. My family and I had just started the school year at Rosenwald High School and Elementary in Holly Springs, Missouri. My father was the head football, basketball, and baseball coach at Rosenwald High when he received a phone call from Juanita Foster Barnes. She stated that he had gotten the job at Lincoln High School to be the business teacher and assistant football and basketball coach.

DENTON — Cody Sokol threw five touchdown passes and Louisiana Tech’s offense came alive again as the Bulldogs showed their road grit for the second time in five days by rolling over North Texas, 42-21, in front of 16,998 at Apogee Stadium in Denton Thursday night.

It doesn’t get any easier for the 0-2 Grambling State Tigers this weekend as they take on Bethune-Cookman at 4 p.m. Saturday at Municipal Stadium in Daytona Beach, Florida.
The Wildcats opened the season with a win over FBS opponent Florida International and stand atop the HBCU Sports FCS and Division I poll after winning last year’s National Black College Championship.
Bethune-Cookman (1-0) defeated FIU 14-12 in its Aug. 30 season opener in Miami. Quarterback Quentin Williams threw a touchdown in the fourth quarter to help B-CU beat FIU.

All 3 parish prep teams to play on road today

All three parish prep teams will be looking for their first wins of the season today after falling in last week’s season openers.
Cedar Creek will play at 1-0 Jonesboro-Hodge, Grambling Lab will play at 0-1 LaSalle and Ruston High will play 1-0 Airline.
The Class 1A Cougars fell 14-7 last week at home to Class 4A Loyola Prep, Grambling fell 38-30 at Red River and Ruston lost 47-7 at home to Neville.

Techsters volleyball, soccer to play at home

It’s a big weekend for Louisiana Tech athletics as the Lady Techsters volleyball and soccer teams will both play at home.
After spending the first two weeks of the season on the road, the Lady Techsters (2-4) are set to welcome three teams to Ruston for the 2014 Louisiana Tech Fairfield Inn Volleyball Invitational with a total of six matches.
The tournament begins with Stephen F. Austin (3-5) taking on New Orleans (4-3) in a 5 p.m. match today, which will be immediately followed by the Tech’s home opener against UTPA (1-6) at approximately 7 p.m. in the TAC.

Tech to display Zalesch’s WWI ephemera

North Central Louisiana Art Council’s partner in the arts, Louisiana Tech University Enterprise Center Gallery, is excited to present a collection of ephemera, curated by Saul Zalesch, spanning the duration of World War I.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the First World War. Each piece in this exhibition gives us a very real and often intangible glimpse into this important time in our global history.

Club News: The Littera Club

The Littera club began its 2014 year on Sept. 3 at the home of Mildred McGehee. Twenty-eight members attended and were served punch on the spacious front porch while they visited. The sign-in table was decorated with two-tone hibiscus grown by hostess Carolyn Russell, who also decorated interior luncheon tables with pink rose arrangements. Treasurer Joyce Sutton received the dues.
