Slave numbers higher today than ever

I find myself eagerly waiting to watch the critically acclaimed movie “Twelve Years a Slave,” a story about a free man from the North sold into slavery in the South.
However, I found myself shocked after learning in my world geography class this still goes on today.
According to current estimates, there are about 27 million slaves in the world today.
I repeat that number: 27 million. There are more slaves today than there ever has been in the past.
This number is shocking. It includes sex slaves, forced laborers and many other types of slaves.

Bulldogs ready to get back to work

Tech plays host to N. Texas for Homecoming contest

Louisiana Tech celebrates its 88th Homecoming Saturday as the Bulldogs take on North Texas at 2:30 p.m. at Joe Aillet Stadium.
“This week, you have the opportunity to get into Homecoming,” Tech coach Skip Holtz said. We are excited. I know Trace Adkins is going to have the opportunity to be here to sing the National Anthem, which is a real treat for us. I know he is a guy that played football here. We are excited to have the opportunity to see him and bring him back.”

GSU football gets ‘Dirty’

Dennis “Dirt” Winston, who had been serving as defensive coordinator, has taken over as interim head coach of the Grambling State football program. The Tigers, who have not practiced since Tuesday, are scheduled to play at Jackson State at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Prep teams set for Week 7

District rivalries heat up tonight as Lincoln Parish high school football teams hit the field for Week 7.
Ruston plays host to West Monroe while Cedar Creek and Grambling Lab are both on the road for District 2-1A contests. The Cougars will play at top-ranked Haynesville while the Kittens head to Plain Dealing to take on LA New Tech.
Following are preview capsules on those contests:
Ruston (5-1, 1-0 in 2-5A) vs. West Monroe (4-2, 1-0)
Kickoff: 7 p.m.; Ruston
The Bearcats and Rebels renew their longtime rivalry and battle for a share of first-place in District 2-1A.

Tech volleyball to play home matches

For the first time since 1982, Memorial Gym is opening its doors for official use as Louisiana Tech’s volleyball team will host a pair of Conference USA matches versus Middle Tennessee and Southern Miss in the 63-year-old gymnasium at 7 p.m. tonight and 2 p.m. Sunday.

Tech tennis team to hit ITA regionals

Three productive fall tournaments have prepared the Louisiana Tech tennis players for the biggest tournament of the season, the ITA Southern Regionals to be played on the campus of Auburn University in Auburn, Ala., on Saturday-Monday.
The tournament serves as a regional individual championship and also as a qualifier for the USTA/ITA National Indoors Championships which will be held at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. on Nov. 7-10.

Tech soccer to feature ‘Game Day Experience’

Local youth soccer teams and LA Tech Kids Club members are invited to the Louisiana Tech soccer match on Sunday versus Southern Miss at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex for a unique game day experience.
Starting at 12:15 p.m., pre-game talk with head coach Kevin Sherry and his coaching staff will take place leading up to the 1 p.m. kickoff against the Golden Eagles in a Conference USA matchup.
At intermission, kids can participate in a 10-minute soccer game and at the conclusion of the match a post-game clinic with the Lady Techsters players.
