All 3 parish prep teams to play on road today

in

All three parish prep teams will be looking for their first wins of the season today after falling in last week’s season openers.
Cedar Creek will play at 1-0 Jonesboro-Hodge, Grambling Lab will play at 0-1 LaSalle and Ruston High will play 1-0 Airline.
The Class 1A Cougars fell 14-7 last week at home to Class 4A Loyola Prep, Grambling fell 38-30 at Red River and Ruston lost 47-7 at home to Neville.

Techsters volleyball, soccer to play at home

It’s a big weekend for Louisiana Tech athletics as the Lady Techsters volleyball and soccer teams will both play at home.
After spending the first two weeks of the season on the road, the Lady Techsters (2-4) are set to welcome three teams to Ruston for the 2014 Louisiana Tech Fairfield Inn Volleyball Invitational with a total of six matches.
The tournament begins with Stephen F. Austin (3-5) taking on New Orleans (4-3) in a 5 p.m. match today, which will be immediately followed by the Tech’s home opener against UTPA (1-6) at approximately 7 p.m. in the TAC.

Tech to display Zalesch’s WWI ephemera

North Central Louisiana Art Council’s partner in the arts, Louisiana Tech University Enterprise Center Gallery, is excited to present a collection of ephemera, curated by Saul Zalesch, spanning the duration of World War I.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the First World War. Each piece in this exhibition gives us a very real and often intangible glimpse into this important time in our global history.

Club News: The Littera Club

The Littera club began its 2014 year on Sept. 3 at the home of Mildred McGehee. Twenty-eight members attended and were served punch on the spacious front porch while they visited. The sign-in table was decorated with two-tone hibiscus grown by hostess Carolyn Russell, who also decorated interior luncheon tables with pink rose arrangements. Treasurer Joyce Sutton received the dues.

Franklin: Key word is coordinating

Kip Franklin spends his days planning for things he hopes never happen.
As director of the Lincoln Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, it’s Franklin’s job to make sure first responders and other government agencies know what to do in the event of a natural disaster, hazardous materials incident, train derailment or terror threat.
“You have to plan as if they were going to happen,” Franklin said.

Remembering Patriot Day

A.E. Phillips has held a ceremony on 9/11 for the past 12 years to honor and remember the people who lost their lives during the terrorist attack on Washington D.C. and New York City on Sept. 11, 2001.
There were a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks that day launched by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaida that killed almost 3,000 people and caused approximately $10 billion in damages.
Students and teachers at A.E. Phillips not only wanted to honor those who lost their lives, but also the service men and women who sacrificed their own lives to save others in the aftermath.

Section 8 housing standards change

Some of Ruston’s Section 8 housing tenants may find themselves having to pay for an extra bedroom or move to a smaller unit.
The city’s board of aldermen on Monday approved a recommendation from the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development revising the occupancy standard to one bedroom per each two people in a household.
Aldermen also approved raising the Section 8 minimum monthly rent from $25 to $50. The new rules go into effect with each Section 8 recipient’s annual review.
