Goff swings in for Diamond ’Dogs

Former Campbell coach takes over Tech’s baseball program

Knowing the Bulldogs’ baseball team has struggled to dent the win column in recent years, Louisiana Tech Director of Athletics Tommy McClelland was determined to target a new head coach with experience in turning losing programs into winners.
McClelland believes he hit the bull’s-eye in Greg Goff, who was announced this morning as the new coach for the Bulldogs during a press conference held at the Charles Wyly Athletics Center.

Tech tennis ranked seventh in region

Louisiana Tech finished seventh in the southern region In the final 2013-14 Division I regional rankings released this week by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Alexandra Starkova (pictured above) and her fellow Lady Techsters compiled a 15-7 overall record which included a program record 11-match winning streak. Of the six schools that finished ahead of Tech only one (Samford) was not a member of the Southeastern Conference. Five were also nationally ranked in the final ITA poll. Tech was also the second highest ranked team from Louisiana behind only LSU.

Local filmmaker risks Skid Row for art

A simple smile and a “Good morning” were enough to lift the spirits of Ruston native Trent Dion Soto in a situation that most people wouldn’t even consider trying.
For 30 days, Soto experienced life as a homeless person — with only $5 in his pocket just in case —w in Los Angeles’ Skid Row, which he said is one of the roughest places to be homeless.
Soto, an artist and filmmaker, is in the final stages of creating “Where Will You Sleep?” his documentary film on his Skid Row experience.

France gives Grambling vet highest honor

Lamore Carter remembers the summer of 1943 as if it were yesterday. It was June. He had just graduated as valedictorian of Central High School in Galveston, Texas.
He already knew what was coming next. Carter had received his U.S. Army draft notice a month before. Within the year — on June 6, 1944 — allied forces launched Operation Overlord, landing on five beaches along a 50-mile stretch of the French coast in the Normandy regions, including one beach code-named Utah.

Downsville man arrested for child molestation

OUACHITA PARISH — On June 5, investigators with the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations and Homeland Security Investigations charged 52-year-old Michael Golden of Downsville with two counts of child molestation. The arrest was the result of an investigation of a website that traffics in child pornography.

LA Tech announces new coach

Louisiana Tech University introduced Greg Goff as its new baseball coach during a Friday morning press conference at the Charles Wyly Athletic Complex.
Goff just wrapped up his seventh season as head coach at Campbell where he led the Camels to their first NCAA postseason victory ever.
He was among several candidates Tech athletic director Tommy McClelland interviewed for the job, including Tulane interim coach Jake Gautreu, Southern Miss assistant Chad Caillet and Texas Wesleyan coach and former Tech pitcher Mike Jeffcoat.

Keeping area youth healthy

Although for some of us it may be hard to conceive, there are kids right here in Lincoln Parish who aren’t getting the nutrition they need to keep their bodies heathy during the summertime.
Many children, the majority from underprivileged or broken homes, only have one nutrient-rich meal a day during the school year — the meal they are served in the school cafeteria.
