Tech choir concert set for Tuesday

One orchestra, three choirs and four soloists will combine to perform a signature event celebrating the 25th anniversary of Louisiana Tech University’s School of Performing Arts.
The Louisiana Tech University Chamber Singers, Concert Choir, North Central Masterworks Chorus and Chamber Orchestra will all perform May 13 in Howard Auditorium.
“This concert is the grand culmination of the entire year of these wonderful and talented young musicians here at Tech,” said John Petzet, director of choral activities. “They have spent the last seven weeks preparing these masterful pieces.”

Ben Bleich enters 2nd district judge’s race

Second Judicial District Assistant District Attorney Ben Bleich announced recently that he is officially entering the race for District Judge for the 2nd Judicial District, Division “A” in Claiborne Parish. The district includes the parishes of Jackson, Bienville, and his home parish, Claiborne.

Miss. Woman charged with fraud

A Mississippi woman remains in the Lincoln Parish Detention Center today charged with one each of unauthorized use of an access card as theft and illegal transmission of monetary funds stemming from use of checks and credit cards stolen in Ruston a year ago.
Police say Kizzetta Nicole McClendon, 35, of Forest, Miss., stole a purse at a local business in May 2013, and later used checks and credit cards that were in the purse at businesses in Mississippi.

Bridge to Bulldogs program opens doors, offers opportunities

Louisiana Tech University’s admission requirements have become increasingly selective over the past several years and becoming part of the Tech family can offer some academic challenges for even some of the best students.
But where there’s a will, there’s a way.  Bridge to Bulldogs is a program, in partnership with Bossier Parish Community College, designed to help students who might just miss the ACT/SAT scores for admission or may fall just short in other areas, and offer them a pathway to admission to Tech.

Lady Bearcats strong at state

Ruston girls finish in fifth place at Class 5A championship meet

BATON ROUGE — The Ruston High School Lady Bearcats took a fifth-place finish Saturday night as the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class 5A Track and Field Championships wrapped up at Bernie Moore Stadium on the LSU Campus.
Ruston High’s boys team finished 23rd with five points.
Top performers for the Lady Bearcats included Kristen Clark, who finished second in the javelin, Hannah Siegmund, who finished second in the 200m dash and Kourtni Goldsmith, who finished second in the high job.

Dianond’ Dogs drop 2014 home finale

Louisiana Tech wrapped up its 2014 home schedule with a 7-3 loss to Charlotte, as the visiting 49ers completed a three-game Conference USA series sweep of the Bulldogs on Senior Day at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park.
With a 4-2 lead after eight innings, Charlotte’s (17-29-1, 8-17 C-USA) Logan Sherer helped increase the 49ers lead over Tech (15-32, 5-22 C-USA) with a three-run home run in the ninth to seal the series sweep.
The Bulldogs struggled to score runs for the first seven innings as the team stranded 13 base runners in the loss.

SWAC baseball tourney starts Wednesday in N.O.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Southwestern Athletic Conference has selected the New Orleans MLB Urban Youth Academy at Wesley Barrow Stadium as the site for its upcoming 2014 SWAC Baseball Tournament.
The venue, located in Pontchartrain Park in New Orleans, is a replacement site after the league decided to move the tournament from LaGrave Field as a result of student-athlete safety concerns. LaGrave Field was host to last year’s SWAC postseason tournament in Fort Worth, Texas.

Cougars to face St. Frederick

Seventh-seeded Cedar Creek will play at second-seeded St. Frederick in Class 1A quarterfinal state baseball tournament action at 6 p.m. today in Monroe. In Class C action, third-seeded Downsville Charter School reached the state semifinals with a 4-3 win over Summerfield last Thursday and will face second-seeded Claiborne Christian at 4 p.m. this Thursday at McMurray Park in Sulphur.

Drop off hazmat items Saturday

Spring cleaning often leads to the discovery of all sorts of items that many of us had forgotten we had: computers that no longer work, dead batteries, half-empty paint cans and the like.
The city of Ruston and Lincoln Parish are teaming up again this year on the annual Household Hazardous Material Collection Day, a day specifically designed for residents to have a safe, proper way to dispose of dangerous substances and other items that just seem to stack up around the house.
