RPAR begins new tackle football program

in

As the prep and college football season starts up, youngsters in the parish looking to knock helmets on the gridiron are in luck as Ruston Parks and Recreation will be offering tackle football for the first time this season.
“We did our research over the winter months last year of other park and recreation departments and realized we should be offering a tackle football program,” Ashlynn Shell, RPAR recreation supervisor, said. “It adds another dimension to our catalogue of programs.”

SHREVEPORT — For Ruston High School football coach Brad Laird, it was all about the reps.
The Bearcats were hit hard by graduation, so with predominately new starters on both sides of the ball, Laird was more than pleased to travel to Shreveport Thursday to scrimmage against Byrd High School.
“You just get so much more out of that kind of scrimmage than you do a spring game or preseason practice,” Laird said. “At this point the kids are getting fired up about the upcoming season and they want to get out there and face someone else, not themselves.

Cost of children has good return

in
Darden, Jessica 2014.jpg

The cost of raising children can be equated in more than just dollars.
And even though there are different parenting styles, I’m sure we can all agree that it takes a lot of time and money. But to me, the return investment is much more than parents put in.
The United Stated Department of Agriculture sent out a press release earlier this week saying the cost to raise a child born in 2013 is $245,340 ($304,480 adjusted for projected inflation) for food, housing, child care and education and other child-rearing expenses up to age 18.

Gipson, E'Vonne.jpg

The suicidal death of well-known actor Robin Williams prompted my concern about the increase of untreated clinical mental illness cases in the United States.
Williams’ death on Aug. 11 proves that seeking help when suffering from mental illness isn’t just a childhood issue, but is important at every stage of life.
A local woman I know said she’s suffered with depression all of her life. She emphasized that she was often sad as a teen, but the depression increased after her mother passed away during her college years.
