GSU needs positive attention

Being part of the national spotlight is nothing new for the Grambling State University athletics department and especially the university’s football team.
It was that football team along with the school’s world-renowned Marching Tiger Band that made Grambling a household word in the 1960s and 70s.
Everybody knew about and talked about Grambling.
Now, once again, everyone knows about and is talking about Grambling State University — for all the wrong reasons.

Wilda Lou Craig

Graveside services for Wilda Lou Craig, 81, of Magnolia, AR formerly of Ruston, LA will be 2:30 P.M. Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at Pines Memorial Gardens in Ruston, LA under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston, LA. Officiating the service will be her sons-in-law, Jim Alford and Henry Gilbert. Visitation will be prior to the service from 1:00 P.M. until 2:00 P.M. Tuesday at Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston, LA. Mrs. Craig was born May 16, 1932 on Petit Jean Mt. in AR and died on Saturday, October 19, 2013 in Magnolia, AR.

Ben Jones, Jr.

Ben Jones, Jr., 73 of Ruston, went to be with our Lord and Savior Thursday October 17. Ben was a member of Northview Baptist Church of Ruston. Services will be held at Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home Sunday October 20, 2013 at 3:00 pm. Burial will follow at Douglas Cemetery. Officiating will be Bro. Wendell Sellers of Northview Baptist Church. Ben and his wife Janice were the proud owners of Jones’ Citgo Station in Ruston for 28 years. He was honored to be able to serve his community, all while making lifetime friendships along the way.

Riser, McAllister reach runoff

in
Mayo second behind Riser in Lincoln Parish results for 5th District congressional race

Lincoln Parish voters dittoed the rest of the 5th Congressional District in tapping state Sen. Neil Riser as the first-place finisher in Saturday’s primary election.
But local voters bucked the district results for the No. 2 position, opting for Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo over districtwide second-place finisher Vance McAllister.
Riser and McAllister will meet in the general runoff election on Nov. 16.

Grambling faces $20,000 fine after forfeiting contest

GRAMBLING — On Friday morning, Grambling State President Frank Pogue held a press conference pledging his support to the GSU football team, which he said would soon be leaving for a Saturday contest at Jackson State University.
By late Friday afternoon, Pogue was sending a letter to Jackson State President Carolyn W. Meyer expressing his “deep regret” that GSU, which now stands at 0-8 on the season, was unable to field a football team for the matchup which would have been JSU’s Homecoming game.
