American landmarks come into focus for AEP students

History teacher at A.E. Phillips Lab School Kristina Kaasab said she is grateful for the opportunity her students were able to experience last week as they toured Washington D.C.
“We took the trip so we could study the city’s history, culture and beauty,” Kaasab said. “We visited so many historical sites like the Smithsonian museums, Washington Monument and Capitol Hill, which helped our students to make real-world connections to what we study in the classroom.”

Saturday dice run to benefit Wounded Warrior Project

Local members of the North Central chapter of American Bikers Active Toward Education are celebrating Armed Forces Day by holding a Dice Run to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.
Registration for the event begins at 8 a.m. Saturday at 3 Docs Brewhouse, located at 2550 W. Alabama Ave. The cost is $25 per rider and $10 per passenger. The last bike out of the gate will be at 10:30 a.m.

‘Sound of Music’ auditions set for Saturday, Monday

Auditions for Ruston Community Theatre’s next production, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s award winning musical “The Sound of Music” will be at The Dixie Center for the Arts at 10 a.m. Saturday and 6:30 p.m. Monday.
“The Sound of Music” opens July 10 and will be directed by Dee Alexander.

Tech professor receives regional advisor award

Jun-Ing Ker, associate professor and program chair of industrial engineering at Louisiana Tech University, has won the 2014 Institute of Industrial Engineering (IIE) Faculty Advisor Recognition Award for the Southeast Region.
The award recognizes a single faculty advisor from the 14-chapter region who has contributed to the IIE’s Southeast Region by supporting officers and student activities as a teacher, an advisor and a mentor.

Slattery, Blucas to wed in June

Mr. and Mrs. Remigius Joseph Slattery III, of North Little Rock, Ark., are pleased to announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Sommer Mary Slattery, of Grapevine, Texas, to Phillip Stephen Blucas, of Baton Rouge.
