Mr. Walter Carroll Burton, Sr.

Funeral services for Mr. Walter Carroll Burton, Sr., age 74 of Ruston, will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at Owens Memorial Chapel in Ruston. Officiating the service will be Rev. Dale Oden. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Ruston under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston.

Anytime Fitness to build at historic Holiday Inn site

New facility will double the size of current location

In a project that has been two years in the making, Anytime Fitness will be almost double in size in the next few weeks.
During a groundbreaking ceremony held on Wednesday, staff members and owners announced plans for the new facility, which is set to open in mid-October.
Dani Pendarvis, general manager, said they are very excited about the new facility and thanked everyone for their support.

Back-to-school plans, construction on agenda

The Lincoln Parish School Board will meet in final preparations for the 2014-15 school year at the regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday night.
Several items will be discussed for approval including some change orders requested by Director of Auxiliary Services Charles Owens in attempt to complete several ongoing summer construction projects; included renovations to Cypress Springs Elementary School and Glen View Elementary School, as well as additions to the L.J. “Hoss” Garrett football stadium at Ruston High School.

Tech fans, alumns to kick off a new year at Happening

For friends, fans and alums of Louisiana Tech University, summer is a perfect time to celebrate the start of a new year and a new football season.
The Happening XXXIII, presented by Argent Financial, will take place at 6 p.m. Aug. 22 at the Monroe Civic Center and feature a relaxed, tailgate-style atmosphere with remarks by Tech President Les Guice, Athletics Director Tommy McClelland and other select Bulldog and Lady Techster coaches.
Heavy hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar will open beginning at 6 p.m. with featured guests addressing the gathering at 7:15 p.m.

Raise awareness, stop bullying

Each year children and adults, both male and female, are subjected to the ridicule of others for a multitude of reasons.
According to the website Stop Bullying, bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school-aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally and excluding someone from a group on purpose.

Water has a bite, dogs enjoy the fun

Climate change can’t stop the dog days of summer in Ruston.
Although it showed it could dampen the fun to some degree.
That was the case for the Ruston Parks and Recreation Department fifth annual K-9 Pool Party held at the Municipal Pool.

SHREVEPORT — The love in the air during Saturday’s Ark-La Miss Sports Museum of Champions 2014 induction ceremony was palpable — wafting through the air like a soft summer breeze, it could felt by everyone.
It was displayed by the tremendous support shown to inductee O.K. “Buddy” Davis, executive sports editor of the Ruston Daily Leader, who looked more like a rock star than writer at the event with throngs of admirers surrounding him during the pre-event reception as well as the induction ceremony itself.

’Dogs report for practice

Louisiana Tech’s started gearing up for the 2014 football season Sunday afternoon as 99 student-athletes reported for fall camp.
The Bulldogs will begin workouts this afternoon.
After arriving on campus and checking in with the coaching staff, received dormitory room keys and had their 2014 head shots taken along with receiving their full fall camp schedule.
