The Lincoln Parish School Board met in Regular Session on Tuesday, June 3, 2014, at 6:00 p.m. in the Board Room of the Lincoln Parish School Board Office, 410 South Farmerville Street, Ruston, Louisiana. Members present were Ms. Debbie Abrahm, Mr. Otha Anders, Mr. Michael Barmore, Ms. Lisa Best, Mr. Curtis Dowling, Mr. Danny Hancock, Ms. Mattie Harrison, Ms. Lynda Henderson, Mr. Trott Hunt, Mr. George Mack, Jr., and Mr. Joe Mitcham.
Mr. Eddie Jones was absent.

Late ‘Moon’ Ducote’ to be inducted to HOF

Richard “Moon” Ducote’ of Cottonport became nationally famous in 1918 for kicking a field goal.
It wasn’t just any field goal, nor was “Moon” Ducote’ just any player.
It was a 41-yard field goal for a Cleveland naval reserve team that beat the mighty Pittsburgh Penguins, 10-9, ending a six-year unbeaten streak by the fabled professional football team of that era. News of that feat, in addition to Ducote’s football prowess from 1915-17 at Auburn University, prompted Glenn “Pop” Warner to call Ducote’ “the greatest football player I ever saw.”

These athletes made worthy impact, too

Not everybody can be in the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, which is closing in on yet another induction ceremony this month — Saturday in Natchitoches.
But through the years, and despite not being accorded the state’s ultimate honor in sports, there have been plenty of athletes who stamped an indelible mark on diamonds, courts, gridirons and tracks.
This is particularly true in Lincoln Parish, whose 51 representatives is the most of any parish in the state on the Hall’s membership roll.

Ruston High nets new team

School preparing to add volleyball as new girls’ sport

If you build it, they will come.
The concept worked for baseball in the movie “Field of Dreams,” and officials at Ruston High School are hoping the same will hold true for volleyball.
RHS teacher/coaches Mandy Cauley and Stephanie Wardach conducted a volleyball clinic last week in preparation to begin building a volleyball program from scratch.
Plans are to implement the formation of a Lady Bearcats volleyball team in three phases, with the first coming at the start of the 2014 school year.

Cox 15th at NCAA meet

Joshua Cox recorded a top-15 finish in his first appearance on the national level as the NCAA Championships came to a close Saturday at Heyward Field in Eugene, Oregon. Cox set a mark of 213-4 (65.03m) to place 15th in the javelin, edging out Kansas State’s Ivan Hartung by more than a foot. A native of Rustonand product of Cedar Creek High School, Cox entered the national meet ranked 14th. By placing in the top 16, Cox will receive second team All-America honors, which will be formally announced Monday.

Tickets for ‘Pigskins and Pearls’ on sale now

Tickets for the annual Pigskins and Pearls Women’s Clinic and Luncheon are on sale with the 2014 event’s date set for July 31 at Squire Creek Country Club.
This year the women’s football luncheon and clinic will begin at 11:30 a.m. with registration starting at 11 a.m.
All proceeds will be donated to the Boys & Girls Club of North Central Louisiana.

Man charged after burglary

At approximately 12:37 p.m. Friday, Lincoln Parish deputies arrested Paul Gardiner Lathan III, charging him with simple burglary relative to an offense that occurred in Lincoln Parish between the dates of June 2 and June 6.
Lathan was also charged with an outstanding warrant, charging him with a probation violation.
At the time of his arrest, Lathan was operating a tan Ford pickup.
Lathan remains a possible suspect in numerous thefts in Lincoln Parish with those matters remaining under investigation.
