Angela Alonzo and her dog Apache were among the few who braved Saturday’s steady light rain and unseasonably cooler temperatures to participate in the Ruston Parks and Recreation Department’s sixth annual K9 Pool Party at the Municipal Pool before the event was cancelled around 10:45 a.m. RPAR is expected to attempt the K9 Pool Party again from 1-3 p.m. today as long as there is no lightning in the area.

Projects being rethought

A congressional decision in 2011 to ban earmarks has backers of both the Lincoln Parish I-20 transportation corridor program and a plan to draw drinking water from Lake D’Arbonne rethinking ways to get the projects funded.
“Both of (the projects) have benefitted from earmarks,” Ruston Mayor Dan Hollingsworth said, referring to the once popular process that allowed federal lawmakers to seek — and often get — money for their districts.

Parish schools are gearing up for a fresh start this week with “prep” programs.
Ruston High School will host an entire “Prep Week,” beginning tomorrow.
“This is one of our favorite times of the year,” said RHS Counselor Kay White. “It’s purely an option, but we encourage everyone to come because if you don’t take advantage of Prep Week you won’t be ready to go.”

David Colvin may have an 11-year dream coming true. That is, if he sends in the highest bid.
Colvin has been vying for a piece of adjudicated property located next to a parcel of land he already owns on West Alabama Avenue near the Maple Street intersection.
The property, which is approximately 2.5 acres, was a trailer park that was abandoned more than 10 years ago. In 2003, Colvin said he noticed the property was dilapidating.

When we decided to bring home an adorable little sister for our Lady Godiva, the individuals at the Heart of Louisiana Humane Society in Winnfield told us she was a Chihuahua and wouldn’t get much bigger than her 11-pound (fully grown) sister.
