How to teach children to speak out against bullying

From kindergarten to 12th grade, I went to the same public school in the small village of Florien.
I graduated with a small class of 40 — the second largest class that had moved on from that building. We saw each other every day and we knew all of our classmates names, as well as most of their siblings. That’s what happens when you grow up in a small town.
In those 39 other students, there weren’t strong lines that defined the popular kids, the cheerleaders, the geeks and whatever other labeled groups that larger schools tend to have.

World Series: Huge for Ruston

Ruston Mayor Ronny Walker couldn’t stop saying how “huge” it was that Ruston won the bid for the 2019 Dixie Youth World Series.
“It’s huge because it’s the first major, major tournament we’ll have,” Walker said minutes after the youth baseball organization’s announcement Monday in Oxford, Alabama.
“This is a huge economic driver for our city,” he told the Board of Aldermen on Monday night. “This is huge for our city.”

Christine Weldon Caldwell, 90, of Bernice, LA passed away on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at Presbyterian Village in Little Rock, AR. She was born on March 11, 1927, in Bernice, LA.
Funeral services for Christine Weldon Caldwell will be held Friday, August 11, 2017 at 3:00 PM at Bernice Methodist Church. Rev. Johnie Adkins will officiate. Interment will follow at Bernice City Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston, LA. Visitation will be Friday, August 11, 2017 from 2:00 until the service at the church.

Alice Durbin Davis

Alice Durbin Davis, age 89, went to her heavenly home on August 5th at her daughter and son-in-law's home in Houston, Texas. Alice was born March 16, 1928, in Friendship, Louisiana.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Bertha and Jewel Durbin; her husband, Cecil; sister, Martiel Holland; brothers: Arnold, Douglas, and Leon Durbin; and her precious great-grandson, Mason Theodore Whatley.
Alice played on the basketball team and enjoyed studying history at Friendship High School where she graduated in 1945.

Notice is hereby given out of an abundance of caution and in connection with Article IV, Section 21(D)(1) of the Louisiana Constitution, that on June 1, 2017, Entergy Louisiana, LLC (“ELL”), a public utility providing retail electric and gas service throughout the State of Louisiana, filed with the Louisiana Public Service Commission (“LPSC”) its Application for Recovery of Lost Revenues Resulting From the August 2016 Flood Pursuant to Special Order 09-2017. The relief sought therein was re-urged by ELL on July 28, 2017.

MONDAY AUGUST 7TH, 2017
The Village of Simsboro met in regular session on Monday August 7th, 2017 at 6:00 PM.
Council members present were Alderman Doug Durrett, Alderman Jerry Davis and Alderman Joe Reed.
Mayor Foster opened the meeting with prater and Alderman Doug Durrett led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Mayor Foster presented the Agenda for August 7th, 2017 to the Aldermen and asked for a motion to accept as presented. Motion was made to adopt the Agenda by Alderman Jerry Davis and Alderman Doug Durrett. Motion passed.

Back to school: Students, teachers prepare for new year in Lincoln Parish

Lincoln Parish students, faculty and staff are getting their school supplies in order, preparing for buses to arrive and begin the 2017-18 school year. 
All Lincoln Parish schools will soon be in session with the exception of Lincoln Preparatory School, which began Wednesday.
Lincoln Parish public schools will begin Friday while Cedar Creek School will begin on Wednesday.
Lincoln Parish schools superintendent Mike Milstead said he expects to have a “ great school year” where the school systems continues to “address the needs of the whole child.”
