Violence against women is a men’s issue

John hit Mary. She went to the hospital and received stitches and John said he wouldn’t do it again. Mary went back home.
Of course, this story is not factual but a representation of what we see every day at DART. As victim advocates tell this story, the same question is asked over and over: Why did Mary go back?
That’s a fair question. I had the same one. Mostly I couldn’t understand because I have never been a victim of domestic abuse.

Night Out: Join the fun

Everybody deserves an occasional night out on the town and the Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office is taking that concept of a step further.
They’re inviting the entire parish to join in the National Night Out event beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday at public safety complex located at 161 Road Camp Road here in Ruston.
The come-and-go event will include information on home and neighborhood safety, as well as free food, children’s activities and an opportunity for attendees to mix and mingle with the law enforcement officers.

Big-time television: We got all three channels

It’s hard to believe at one time we could only get three TV stations in Dubach.
I don’t remember the brand of TV we had. I’m sure it was a Sylvania, Motorola, or Zenith. That’s all Daddy ever bought. It was an important big black box that sat on a swivel stand and brought us the moon landing and the Kennedy funeral.

Tech XC teams sweep Ford Invitational titles

CLINTON, Miss.— The Louisiana Tech men’s and women’s cross country teams enjoyed a successful Saturday at Choctaw Trails in Clinton, Mississippi, as the Bulldogs and Lady Techsters both claimed the Division I titles at the Watson Ford Invitational, hosted by Mississippi College.
As a whole, the Bulldogs finished the men’s 8k with an average time of 26:56.80 to place first ahead of Jackson State and Alcorn State. LA Tech’s women took home first place among Division I schools with an average time of 25:30.49 to finish ahead of Mississippi Valley State, Jackson State and Alcorn State.

Tech volleyball wins first C-USA match of season

The Louisiana Tech women’s volleyball team ended a losing streak of four straight and brought home its first 2017 Conference USA victory on Sunday afternoon, defeating Alabama-Birmingham 3-1 (14-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-20) from the Thomas Assembly Center.
As a team, the Lady Techsters (6-13, 1-4 C-USA) outhit the Blazers (9-12, 3-3 C-USA), .285 to .136, while committing just 15 errors on 130 attacks on the afternoon.

• Ex-Louisiana Tech Dunkin’ Dogs star forward Erik McCree has signed with the Miami Heat, continuing a Bulldogs’ tradition with that NBA franchise that started with Scotty Robertson, the late former assistant coach, and power forward P.J.Brown.

GSU, Prairie View soccer match ends in draw

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas | Kaylee Holt’s penalty kick goal with just 29 seconds remaining helped the Grambling State University women’s soccer team to a 3-3 tie over Prairie View A&M in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) match at the PVAMU Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon.
Grambling State (6-5-1 overall, 4-0-1 SWAC) opened the scoring in the fifth minute as Brittany Terry converted on a penalty kick to give the Lady Tigers a quick 1-0 lead.
With the clock being a factor late, Kaylee Holt knocked in the tying goal off a penalty kick with 29 seconds remaining in regulation.
