Laura Payne Bonnette

Laura Payne Bonnette passed away peacefully at her home and birthplace on September 2, 2021, with her faithful daughter Patsy by her side. Laura’s Godly journey ended just shy of her 100th birthday.

A graveside service honoring Laura’s life of faith will be held at New Hope Cemetery in Dodson on Monday, September 6, 2021, at 2 p.m. with Revs. Robert Leach, Jack Busby, Tim Harris, and Charles Wesley officiating.

Laura was predeceased by her parents, I.B. “Buddy” Payne and Martha Young Payne; Laura’s husband of 58 years, James Ashton Bonnette; her son, Jimmy Glen Bonnette; and son-in-law, Bobby Sharp and dear friend Bob “Bob Day” Tucker.

Laura is the last surviving member of 10 siblings, Avis Adrigan (Herman), Ollie Kelly (Clomer), Attrice McKaskle (Mac), Polly Rider (Jim), Laveme Simmons (Morris), Jack Payne (Ernestine), Lewis (Annie Mae), Sue Leach (Phillip), I.B. Payne (Peggy).

She is survived by her daughter, Patsy Bonnette Sharp; and grandchildren, Gary Sharp (Lori), Greg Sharp (Rehnea) Laurie Bonnette, Angela McCullin (Mike), James “Beaux” Bonnette; daughter-in-law, Sharron Bonnette; great-grandchildren, Abbie Sharp, Katelyn Keowen, Malayne Sharp, Matthew Sharp and Fallon Sharp, Kayla Boots (Danny), Elizabeth Kearney (James) Colten McCullen; great-great grandchildren, Braden, Brenton and Kolyns; and a host of nieces, nephews and special neighbor, Jeannie Stewart and many friends.

Laura was a woman of faith and read her bible and tirelessly prayed for her family and friends every day and twice on Sundays. A wonderful cook, she will be fondly remembered for her pecan pralines and divinity as well as her weekly Sunday lunch featuring her famous rump roast and gravy and turnip greens and hot water cornbread. This was a tradition that lasted many years.

Laura lived in Ruston from 1947 until 2018, then returning to her home place in Dodson. Laura worked at Morgan and Lindsey, Lewis & Co., Alexander Floor Covering and operated Laura’s Drapery and Gifts until her retirement. She was a member of the Ruston Church of the Nazarene and was treasurer for many years at the Hudson Holiness Camp Ground.

Honoring Laura as pallbearers are Gary Sharp, Greg Sharp, Matt Sharp, James Bonnette, Don Leach and Steve Payne. Honorary pallbearers are J. D. Bradford and Richard “Dick” Baker.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at Cross Point Church of the Nazarene, Ruston. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Hudson Camp Ground 523 Jake Creel Rd., Dodson LA 71422, Cross Point Church P.O. Box 219, Ruston, LA 71273-0219.

The family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers, Hand in Hand Hospice, Dr. Mark Shelton, Chris Ketchum, Lisa Vines, Charlene Cloud, Magnolia Home Health and Deloris Davis. You were all a caring group.
