Denvel D. McCullough, Sr.

Denvel D McCullough, Sr. was a caring husband, father, grandfather, son and brother.

He left this world on January 31, 2022. He was born on February 2, 1946 to James Calvin and Evelyn Palestine McCullough. After graduating high school at Forest High School in 1964 he went on to attend and graduate Gulf Coast Bible College in Houston, Texas with a degree in theology in 1968.

After meeting the love of his life, Velina, at Camp Pollock in Louisiana they went on to marry in June of 1972 and have five children and nine grandchildren. Denvel was an ordained minister in the Church of God as well as a lifelong member of the Ruston Church of God in Ruston.

He and his wife Velina spent many summers with their children and then grandchildren at Camp Pollock where they first met and fell in love. Denvel was also a corrections officer with the Lincoln Parish Detention Center for many years and later retired from there.

Denvel was known for grilling hamburgers for many years at the Cedar Creek concessions stand. Denvel loved hunting deer with his grandmother-in-law, and he loved a good game of checkers with his grandchildren. His favorite pastime was watching his cows and playing with his granddogs.

Denvel was preceded in death by his wife of many years Velina Jane McCullough; his parents, James Calvin and Evelyn Palestine McCullough of Goodwill; and niece, Cynthia Whorton Grey of Tyler, Texas.

Left to cherish his memory are his children Denvel D McCullough, Jr. and wife Estelle of Columbus, Ohio, Lori McCullough of Ruston, Sam McCullough and wife Jenni of Belche, Jared McCullough and wife Katie of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Sarah McCullough of Ruston; sisters, Earline McDonald of Oak Grove, Joan Whorton and husband Lester of Forest, Brenda McKoin and husband Russell of Bastrop, brothers Larry McCullough of Oak Grove and Roger McCullough and wife Jane of Oak Grove.

He is also survived by his many beloved grandchildren Sean, Amara, Nick, Gavin, Emily, Denvel, Aiden, Hannah, and Caroline, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston Monday February 7, 2022 at 11 a.m. Graveside services will follow at 2:30 at Redwing Cemetery in Oak Grove under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, February 6, 2022, at Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston from 5-7 p.m.

Pallbearers are Deja Burkhalter, Christian Brunning, Clayton “Bubba” Dickerson, Sean Palmer, Nicholas Palmer, Gavin McCullough, Aiden McCullough, and Tony Levingston.

Honorary pallbearers are Amara McCullough, Denvel McCullough III, Joe Smith, Wayne McCullough and Jack Doyle McCullough.
