Deacon John L. Tellis departed this life on Thursday, October 1, 2009 in his home after a lengthy illness at the age of 79. He was the first born of Almus and Beatrice Tellis, both of whom preceded him in death. He lived most of his life in Ruston working at his well-known business, “Tellis Barber Shop” on South Jones Street in Ruston. He was married to Emma Ragland of New Port News, VA. To this union five children were born.
He was a dedicated family man who contributed much to his church, Miracle Temple Church of God In Christ, and the community. He served as Sunday School Superintendent for over 40 years. He was appointed as assistant to the Lieutenant Governor’s office during the highlight of his political career. He served on several community organizations including the Ruston Voter’s League (President); American Legion Post 593 of Grambling (Commander); Federal Credit Union (Board of Directors); Lincoln Total Community Action (Board of Directors); Lincoln Parish Political Organization; and the Political Allies Association. Deacon Tellis was elected to the Ward II Ruston City Council and ran for State Representative. He worked in his church and served on many boards and committees. Deacon Tellis was also the founder of the Ruston Boxing Club where he mentored many youth.
Visitation will be held at Our Christian Funeral Home, Ruston on Friday October 9, 2009 at 6 – 7pm Funeral Service will be held October 10,2009 at Miracle Temple GOGIC at 11:00 am.
