Nursing students from Louisiana Tech University will partner with the Ruston Fire Department, Ruston Police Department and Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office to present “Safety Saturday” at Lowe’s in Ruston.

The event is designed to educate the community on various aspects of the home safety and to heighten awareness about the resources that are available.

Tech’s nursing students will use the opportunity to work directly with the community and with personnel from the area’s public safety agencies.

“This gives our students the opportunity to provide teaching and hands-on community services such as hand washing tips, prevention of communicable diseases such as the flu and helps them to learn to provide a collaborative partnership with other community service providers,” Tech assistant professor of nursing Ramona Guin said.

The event will include a Ruston Fire EMS ambulance providing blood pressure checks, a fire ladder truck, the Ruston Police Department and Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office providing expert instructions regarding gun safety and drawings for fire evacuation plans. For children, there will be a “building a fire truck” project, face painting, chalk drawings and more.

“Safety Saturday” is funded through the Home Safety Council, Lowe’s, Ruston Fire Department, Ruston Police Department, Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s office and Louisiana Tech University Division of Nursing.
