Share the warmth by giving coats

Search your closets for those old coats that you or your children don’t wear any more and think hard about whether they need to be hanging there.

You’ve still got time to get those coats to a local Community Trust Bank branch to benefit a winter coat drive that Ruston’s Junior Auxiliary has organized this year.

The drive ends this afternoon, so squeeze a moment into your busy day to be a friend to a child whose parents may not be able to afford the new winter coat that is so desperately needed. And for a child without one, what may seem like an old or out of style coat to us will be a warm blanket of charitable kindness.

It’s a neat way to reach out and be a good person — comfort is something that can be easy to take for granted unless you lack it, and providing a new coat for a child during a winter that some predict will be particularly biting is certainly a worthy cause.

Primary school teachers see the needs of their students more intimately than most recognize.

Every day, the children who are left without their needs met by their providers — for legitimate reasons or neglect — come into the classrooms of Lincoln Parish. The teachers know who these children are and watch as they have to suffer. It’s a poignant reminder that the advantages that helped us to succeed in our lives are not available to all without the help of concerned residents and givers.

During this season of giving in the midst of an economic crisis sweeping the nation, helping those less fortunate is more important than ever. Those of us who can, should make donations to help our friends and neighbors.

“Coats for Kids” is one of the most recognized charity drives around. It’s so widely recognized that people come to expect the annual drive to keep children in their community from having to suffer being cold and the ills that come with that during the winter.

It cannot be a success without everyday people looking in their closets and making decisions that mean giving away something to give something special to someone else.
