A man wanted by the Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office for numerous Ruston-area burglaries has been arrested for the July 9 murder of a man in Lubbock, Texas.Lubbock Police say Alonzo L. Lewis, 25, stabbed 73-year-old Donald McCollough after robbing him in his garage. Lewis is being held in the Lubbock County Jail on $1 million bond.
Capt. Wesley Harris with the LPSO said Lewis had been wanted in connection with burglaries reaching back to fall of 2006, but had eluded capture.
“It’s unlikely we’ll be able to extradite him,” Harris said. “He’s facing a much more serious charge in Texas.”
McCollough, a retired Air Force colonel, flew combat missions as an F-4 pilot in Vietnam and served as deputy commander of now-closed Reese Air Force Base in Lubbock before his murder.
One specific instance connected to Lewis was a Feb. 14 burglary at a home off of Beacon Light Road in Ruston.
Lewis was tracked via a license plate number the victim managed to take down, sheriff’s deputies said.
Deputies searched Lewis’ house and found articles that were reported missing in connection with several area burglaries.
Sheriff’s investigators organized warrants for Lewis’ arrest, but he was believed to have fled the Ruston area.
At that time, sheriff’s investigators recovered $5,000-$6,000 worth of items from Lewis’ house.
Sheriff Mike Stone said Lewis has been linked to residential and commercial burglaries around Lincoln Parish, including several businesses in the Farmerville Highway and Frazier Road area.
His last known local address was on North Village Drive off Frazier Road, the area where many of the burglaries he was sought for occurred.
He was in the National Crime Information Center database, and once arrested for McCollough’s murder, Lubbock Police learned he was wanted by the LPSO.
