Dixon Hearne, author of the new short story collection Plantatia: High-toned and Lowdown Stories of the South and Lowdown Stories of the South and editor of Thanksgiving to Christmas; A Patchwork of Stories is scheduled to have a book signing event from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at Alexander’s Acorn Creek Antiques, located at 1323 S. Service Road in Ruston. Hearne, a West Monroe native who now lives in California, is a speaker at the 2009 Louisiana Book Festival.
There will be a scary hay ride for children from 6-7 p.m. Oct. 29 at Lake Claiborne State Park. There will also be a scary story time, games, treats and refreshments. The entrance fee is $1. Children 3 and younger get in free. For more information, call 318-927-2976 or 1-888-677-2524.
The Louisiana State University AgCenter's Calhoun Research Station will host an educational Field Day on Thursday, Oct. 29. Registration and exhibits will open at 11 a.m. A complementary lunch will be served from noon until 1 p.m. The Calhoun Research Station, located 1.2 miles southwest of I-20 at exit 103, is a unit of the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station, the AgCenter's research branch.
The opening program at 1 p.m. will include updates of agricultural and forestry issues in Louisiana and an overview of the benefits to the Louisiana economy from the creation of new value-added forest and forage products. Calhoun Research Station researchers will present information on various topics during field tours from 1:45 pm until 4:30 p.m. The tour will include demonstrations of producing composite poles from small-diameter trees, producing new chemicals and products by recycling preservatives and wood fiber of decommissioned telephone poles, partially harvesting a forest to produce wood chips for electricity production, and growing miscanthus grass for biofuel. Agribusiness company representatives will also be available to display products and equipment in a trade show atmosphere. RHS Softball sells meal
On Oct. 30, the Ruston High School Softball Booster Club’s will put on the ritz for the annual fundraiser for the girl’s team with Bill Cox’s chicken and sausage jambalaya. The $5 plates can be delivered to residences and offices or Bearcats fans can eat the meal before the game just before they girl’s battle the Wossman Wildcats. Preschooler fun slated
October is a great month for stories and books, so the Lincoln Parish Museum will be offering a story time for preschoolers. Each Friday in October will bring entertainment for the kids that are not in school. The event will start around 10:30 a.m. and it will end at 11 a.m. Bundle up your young ones and bring them to the museum. Door prizes will be given. We will have different presenters for your entertainment. We have some wonderful exhibits for all ages, so come on to see us each Friday morning in October.

Downtown celebration Oct. 30
The annual Halloween Downtown, which involves trick or treating at area merchants, has been scheduled this year for the evening of Oct. 30.

Events are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Trick or treating will begin at City Hall and end at Railroad Park. Participating merchants will have an orange pumpkin poster in their front windows.

The Village of Simsboro will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2 for a regularly scheduled Town Hall meeting. The meeting will take place at Town Hall, located at 2742 Martha Street in Simsboro. Library presents scary film
Lincoln Parish Library and the North Central Louisiana Arts Council will present Friday Night Freakout in their series The Art of Film at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30 in the Lincoln Parish Library meeting room. Spooky cinema is just the thing for starting the Halloween weekend. The Art of Film series is presented monthly and features trivia, treats, and popcorn.
