The grand jury hearing evidence in the fatal arrest of Ronald Greene has recessed after one day of testimony. Body camera footage showed state troopers, beat, tased and dragged Greene the night of his death in 2019 on a rural Union Parish road.

The Union Parish grand jury hearing evidence toward possible indictments of Louisiana state troopers and other officers involved in the fatal arrest of Black motorist Ronald Greene has recessed for the week.

District Attorney John Belton said Monday evening the break was necessary to accommodate the schedule of some of the witnesses. When the panel will reconvene is uncertain.

Belton declined further comment on the proceedings or the potential witness list.

The recess came after only one day of testimony. The 12-member panel convened Monday morning and recessed around 5 p.m.

Greene, 49, died on May 10, 2019, after being beaten by state troopers during his arrest following a high-speed chase that ended when his small SUV crashed on a rural Union Parish road.

Troopers’ actions were caught on body camera footage.

Belton has previously said he would seek “appropriate charges” against at least some of the officers involved.

Grand jury proceedings are closed to the public. A grand jury does not decide guilt or innocent, only whether there is enough evidence to bring a person to trial for an alleged crime.
