Levee bill clears first hurdle

The bill was one of two prominent items discussed during the fourth day of Gov. Kathleen Blanco’s second special legislative session called to deal with issues left in the wakes of hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

The second major item — a bill introduced by Sen. Walter Boasso, R-Baton Rouge, that would consolidate the levee systems in south Louisiana — is set to be debated on the Senate floor Sunday.

There was an attempt to take the two New Orleans sheriffs — criminal and civil — out of the government consolidation bill, Rep. Rick Gallot, D-Grambling, said.
