Sparta Foundation makes education, giving easier
Obtaining funding to educate the area dependent on the Sparta Aquifer is now a bit easier.
The Sparta Groundwater Commission, which is the governmental body designed to address the issue of the depleting Sparta Aquifer, recently developed the Sparta Foundation, a 501 c3 charity organization.
The foundation’s main goal is to educate the areas dependent on the aquifer about the need for conserving this natural resource, which is the main source of water in Lincoln Parish, several other parishes and some areas in Arkansas. The aquifer is currently being used faster than it is able to replenish, which results in a rapidly depleting water source. Due to this overuse, the aquifer levels are declining between one and four feet per year. In Louisiana, the Sparta is overused at 18 million gallons per day.
