Tennis tourney numbers increase
I had the unique pleasure of being a guest on a recent weekend at the second annual Eddie Thomas memorial tennis tournament held at Louisiana Tech’s wonderful tennis facilities. There were more than 70 participants in singles, doubles and mixed doubles tennis teams. Last year there were approximately only 45 participants.
Wow, what an increase thanks mostly to Lynn Jones, the tournament director, and her husband Stan and the Ruston-Lincoln Chamber of Commerce under the direction of Nancy Bergeron and Sarah Trickett. The players were greeted Saturday morning with coffee and beignets from K. Betsey’s Crescent City Cafe and a huge fruit platter from Super 1 Foods. Stan Jones grilled chicken at lunchtime along with potato salad and chips as well as pizza furnished by Domino’s. The players did not go hungry or thirsty thanks to the bottled water donated by the local Sonic Drive In. There were T-shirts and towels for participating and other prizes donated by area Chamber merchants for winning.
The proceeds of the tournament go to the late Eddie Thomas’ family or a charity of their choosing and a portion goes to the Ruston-Lincoln Chamber of Commerce for promoting and organizing the tournament.
The players couldn’t have been more supportive and fun to be around. They came from as far away as Houston, Springhill, West Monroe and Jonesboro and myself from Memphis, Tenn. The majority of them had known Eddie personally and were more than willing to give of themselves in order to help Eddie’s family.
I can’t wait till next year to come back and participate.
