There is sometimes a difference between a trip and a vacation. A trip is simply a physical movement to another location; a vacation has a connotation of an element of relaxation being involved.

I have no wild guess as to before last Jan. 12 how many people went to the partial island country of Haiti to vacation. Thereafter, devastation ensued and completely changed the history of that country.

The location is old by our terms. Occupying basically the western half of the island of Hispaniola, it was first visited in 1492 by, you guessed it, Christopher Columbus. Although being divided into five regions earlier, the island is now occupied by two countries, with the Dominican Republic on the east. Haitians speak French; the Dominicans speak Spanish. Language is not the only division, often bitter, between the two countries.
