The Sparta Groundwater Commission, which is the governmental committee designed to address the issue of the depleting Sparta Aquifer, recently developed a 501c3 charity devoted to educating the public about the need to practice water conservation. The Sparta Aquifer is the main source of water for Lincoln Parish, several other parishes and several areas in Arkansas.

The aquifer levels are declining between one and four feet per year due to overuse. In Louisiana, the aquifer is estimated to be overused by about 18 million gallons per day. Because of this overuse, the aquifer is incapable of replenishing itself at an acceptable rate.

This new charity accepts tax-deductible donations, which it uses to spread the word about the Sparta. The commission hopes that in the future, events such as Waterfest — which is slated to be one of the biggest educational tools for the foundation — will be fully funded through donations and funds raised through the Sparta Foundation.
