Initiative helps increase deputies’ physical fitness levels

Deputy Phil Soileau works out almost every day and has lost more than 30 pounds since last December.

Either before or after a long shift chasing speeders and criminal suspects, sheriff’s deputies might be found running on a treadmill or pumping iron in the gym.

In December 2009, the Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office launched an initiative designed to motivate their lawmen to get in better shape. The incentive? The LPSO would pay for the deputies’ memberships to Anytime Fitness if they chose to join the 24-hour club.

Despite the daily workout regimen in police academy, many veteran law enforcement personnel fall out of shape after a few years on the job.
