Gun bill defeat will help keep campuses safe

The state’s commissioner of higher education, college presidents, several campus police chiefs and college student leaders all voiced strong opposition to this bill for two years in a row.

This year was not the first time legislators were faced with the decision about whether to allow firearms on college campuses. Rep. Ernest Wooton, R-Belle Chasse, the author of the bill, also raised the issue during the 2008 legislative session. Let’s hope that this year’s rejection of it puts the issue to rest for good.
