Poultry plant closure will sting region
Slowly but surely, the global recession continues to trickle down, and its most recent victims are the poultry producers and plant workers in our area.
With Friday’s announcement that Pilgrim’s Pride will shutter plants in Farmerville, El Dorado, Ark., and Douglas, Ga., within 75 days, many in Lincoln and Union parishes are in a state of panic.
Plant workers will receive severance packages and will be eligible to apply for unemployment benefits. The producers, however, are contract workers and won’t receive a penny to help them hobble along until they can come up with Plan B.
