City Director of Water Utilities Richard Aillet said the current 500,000 gallon storage tank has been abandoned — except to store water in case of emergencies — since the 1970s, when a second city storage tank, located on U.S. 167, was built about 35 feet shorter by design error.

“We can’t pump water in it without special valves,” Aillet said.

The proposed new tank, which will be able to hold 2 million gallons of water, is needed because of an increased population, increased fire protection and plans to take on Tech as a customer, Aillet said.
