Be aware of signs of abuse
“He would hit me when I was asleep,” recalled Kelly, who escaped from her husband through a shelter provided by the Domestic Abuse Resistance Team.
The first year of marriage was wonderful, she said, but the physical and verbal abuse progressed in the 31 years they were married. She remembers an occasion where she was taken to the emergency room after he cut her eye.
“You never knew what would set him off,” she said.
Today, Kelly is a board member of DART and joins numerous area individuals who are spreading awareness and debunking myths about domestic violence.
