But by the time lights went out, 170 people were being temporarily housed at the shelter.
The evacuees expected the Red Cross to be on hand, and they were, but it was the generosity of the community that made life for the evacuees a little easier, Billy Baxter of Lucedale, Miss., said.
"I've never seen such nice people in my life," Baxter said. "I stayed through Camille, but it got really hairy and I was nervous about staying in a shelter, but it's been nice here — real nice."
