HOUSTON, Texas — Rice starter John Simms threw a complete game and held the Bulldogs to two runs, as the Owls defeated Louisiana Tech University, 4-2, in the first of the two-game series Tuesday night at Reckling Park in Houston.

Rice struck first with two unearned runs scored in the second inning after an error and a walk to lead 2-0.

The Bulldogs did not respond until the eighth when they broke up the shutout Simms had going after an RBI double by infielder Ryan Gebhardt scored outfielder Taylor Burch, who had reached on a leadoff single to start the inning.
