Kicking off to a life of reading
Jane Watson, with Lincoln Parish Schools Pupil Appraisal, helped with the district’s early grades reading initiative “Kick-Off Event” recently held at Hillcrest Elementary School. Watson facilitated a session for a packed room of parents and community volunteers that focused on how to help students more effectively engage in reading both in and out of the classroom. The event was part of an ongoing partnership between Lincoln ACHIEVE and United Way of Northeast Louisiana that currently has more than 80 community volunteers involved with reading to second grade students at both Hillcrest and Glen View Elementary schools. Following a similar kickoff event at Glen View, the reading project officially rolled out on Jan. 28, and will continue through the second week of May as reading volunteers, parents and teachers join forces to help all students become proficient, on-level readers by the third grade.
