Perception of blindness problem
I occasionally babysit my good friend’s 10-year-old daughter; nothing special, just helping her with homework, making sure she gets a bath, eats dinner and gets in bed. My friend is taking doctoral night classes at Louisiana Tech University. Her classmates had lots of questions for her when they learned her daughter is blind. But they stared at her with open mouths when she told them that most of the babysitters including me are blind as well. “Are you serious” they asked in utter disbelief. This negative response came from educated graduate students studying here in Ruston where it is all too common to see blind people active around town.
