Bulldogs got hurt early by Cal

“Cal is a great football team and anytime you play a top 10 team and then spot them seven points on the kickoff, it’s hard to recover,” said Bulldogs’ first-year head coach Derek Dooley.

Ironically, the Golden Bear that made it tough for the visitors out of the Western Athletic Conference to recover was one of the very players that Dooley recruited while he was an assistant at LSU. Hawkins, a 6-2 and 175-pounder who also had seven catches for 87 yards, became the first Cal player since 1996 to take a game’s opening kickoff back to the end zone.
