Mildred W. Lamkin was born on July 21, 1924. She was the older of two daughters born to Oliver C. and Willie Wedgeworth. After graduating from Arcadia High School in 1942, she attended Louisiana Tech University and was voted one of the outstanding freshmen, plus she served on the Women's League, and earned a BS Degree in Business Administration in 1945. After graduation she lived in Shreveport and worked for the United Gas Company as an accountant for five years. She then moved back to Arcadia to serve as an administrator and bookkeeper for the new Arcadia Hospital. She married J.M. Lamkin, Jr. in 1950; and in 1964 went to work with him in the Bienville Parish Tax Assessor's office as the Chief Deputy Tax Assessor until her retirement in 1984. Upon receiving the 2011 Heritage Award, she said, "Long ago my husband told me of a calling he had to serve the people of this parish. We were partners in that calling. It was our joy and pleasure to do so; and I mean that on a personal and public level." She was an active member of First Baptist Church, Arcadia, and taught in the church's Sunday School and Training Union, and participated in the church's mission work. She was a member of the Fidelis Club of Arcadia and the Arcadia Literature Club.

Shortly before her death, Mildred said, "I loved everybody. I loved my family. And as J.M. always said, 'We love you too; and that's the truth!"

She is survived by her sister, Dorcas Hancock of Clearwater, Florida; her son, James Lamkin of Atlanta, GA; her daughter, Virginia Walker, of The Woodlands, TX; her grandsons Stuart Lamkin, Clint Doughty, Nathan Doughty, and Kyle Walker; her granddaughter Emily Drake; and great grandsons, Sean and Silas Lamkin, and Evan Walker.
